In a video monitor, the intensity of the electron beam is regulated by adjusting voltage levels on the control grid. The control grid is a metal cylinder that sits over the cathode. When a high negative voltage is applied to the control grid, it repels electrons and stops them from passing through the small hole at the end of the structure, thereby shutting off the beam.

Random-Scan Displays
